Additional Review Excerpts for Knowledge Scars
Starvox.net, Matthew Heilman
Knowledge Scars is an impressive debut release from Erica Mulkey, an independent solo artist from California that under the appellation Unwoman has released a darkly erotic and thought-provoking collection of songs. Erica expresses her instrumental prowess as an accomplished vocalist, cellist, and keyboardist. Her style ranges from a kind of experimental trip hop to swirling darkwave atmosphere with just enough static and noise to give it that extra technical punch. [...]

Not only is Knowledge Scars something youll not have heard anything even close to before, but its quite possibly better than the majority of CDs youve lately been listening to. A bold claim, but of course this is only my personal opinion, biased, by the fact that it is so rare to find something this fresh, this new, nowadays. [...]

Leftfield in the extreme, Unwoman - Erika Mulkey [sic] - is a reminder that goth emerged from such sires as art-rock and experimental punk; not just the euro-pop and new romantic that it sometimes seems these days.
Knowledge Scars is an eclectic tapestry of machine rhythms, cello and piano, classically trained vocals, samples... Strange and challenging, it's alien unfamiliarity can suddenly mutate into something safe and domestic, perhaps seen from a new angle - like a magic eye picture, an aural squint pulls it together, a lapse of thought and it's gone again.

Woman meets machine is a great way of describing the works of UnWoman. The debut release, Knowledge Scars includes a diversity of works consisting of female vox, electro trip hop and a talented additional element of the cello. Unwoman on the surface appears soft at first contact but surrounding the well placed voice of Erica is hard electronic beats that tear a message across the mind. In the tracks "Who Programmed My Desire?", "Deeper Understanding - Kate Bush", you get a great feeling of the strength of the music of UnWoman. In the title track, "Knowledge Scars", you'll experience the emotions and power of cello and voice in complete balance.
